We’re shining a spotlight on the Alleghany Historical Museum! Since the Museum’s opening in 2009, a regular feature of the award-winning AHGS newsletter has been “What’s New Old at the Museum?” In preparing this feature, we’ve photographed items to include. The current newsletter only reaches members of the Society (membership’s only 10 bucks a year), and old newsletters are available online.
We wanted to expand on that feature and make the information available to even more folks. Watch the video below, over on YouTube, or catch it on Alleghany Community Television. ACTV will use the footage as filler between programs, so it will have a huge potential audience- currently around 5000 homes!
The Trojan Playmakers’ production of Uncommonly Noble, a brand new play by Cheri Choate, was a successful fundraiser for the newly-renovated Alleghany Community Auditorium, April 28th. ISI helped with graphics including logo design, flyers, TV slides, programs and DVD art.
If you missed it, the show was video taped by Charlie Scott of Alleghany Community Television and will be broadcast later this month on Alleghany Cablevision and Skybest TV. Imaging Specialists is currently working on titles and credits for the TV production. DVDs will be available.
This production was a real home-grown project. The Playmakers collaborated with many area businesses and organizations to assist the Friends of the Auditorium in their efforts to rebuild and repurpose the old Sparta School Auditorium.
Making it all look easy was a cast and crew of hard working area elementary, middle and high school students who (we’re sure) will be involved with many more such productions.
Among those who donated time and effort were Director- Dyani VanHoose, Producer- Jeremy Halsey and Alleghany Community Theatre, Appachian Woodwright, James Maynard, local craftsman, Gracen Lucas, Mary Jane Watson from A Perfect Image Hair Design who helped with makeup, Chris Davis of Studio Redwood– sets and set design, Paula Joines of Wilkes County Theatre– wardrobe, Ashe Community Theatre, Shelley Williams- costumes, Bill Troiani- sound, Jim Williams- lights and the Production’s Sponsor, Alleghany County Schools.
Imaging Specialists is proud to be a part of this extraordinary production by Cheri and her Trojan Playmakers.
Next Thursday night, November 17th at 6:30, Jeremy Halsey will lead a class at the Alleghany County Public Library. The class will focus on Internet Radio, TV and movies, and how to purchase and download music legally.
There is no charge for the class, but registration is required. To register or for more information, contact the Library at 336-372-5573 or contact Jeremy through his site.
The next night, Friday the 18th, at 7, the Special Christmas Show at the Alleghany Jubilee will be filmed. Admission will be just $5.
Make plans to attend 1 (or both!) of these events!
Imaging Specialists and the Alleghany Jubilee are partnering up to produce a television show featuring the Old-Time, mountain music that the Jubilee has presented for almost 18 years.
Jubilee owners, Ernest and Agnes Joines are experts at producing their unique and entertaining shows, but have teamed with ISI and the young technicians of Alleghany Community Television to record and broadcast these initial episodes (hopefully, the first of many). The team plans to produce a Christmas Show to be taped November 18, 2011.
Charles Scott, ACTV’s station manager, is listed as Director in the credits, but he has trained his crew so well, the position is almost unnecessary. According to Charlie, “Daniel Caudill is a Junior at Alleghany High School, but he already knows more than I do about the system we use.”
Daniel is a quiet young man who sat in the back of the auditorium adjusting sound levels and switching input from the two cameras, manned- or make that operated by other AHS students (and graduates) Destiny Blevins, Amber Call and Natalie Marion. Throughout the evening- nearly 3 hours!- these kids impressed us with their knowledge and skill.
Alleghany Community Television will broadcast the show in two parts, Thursdays at 7PM, just before the Alleghany Historical – Genealogical Society’s new interview show, Alleghany Memories.
DVDs of the entire show (both parts), as well as Alleghany Memories, will be available at The Sparta Store for $20.
Ernest Joines is a life-long, mountain musician and is listed on the Blue Ridge Heritage website. Ernest was featured on Gary Moore’s, I’ve got a Secret in 1961. His secret? He designed and operated a one man band.
Agnes Joines is on the town council and currently serves as Mayor pro tem of the town of Sparta. She also Chairman of the local Blue Ridge Opportunity Commission (BROC) and has organized and run an annual Hillbilly Variety Show for several years to raise money for the Alleghany Planning Committee, BROC’s local arm, which helps local citizens with winter heating bills and weatherization projects. They also help with the local Head Start and have a home garden seed distribution program.
Imaging Specialists helped with post production and graphics, generating opening and closing credits. ACTV is currently available in approximately 4500 households in the region across Alleghany Cablevision and Skybest Television.

If you’ve not yet watched Alleghany Community Television, don’t feel bad, a lot of local folks haven’t even heard of it, yet. But you should know our little school-system sponsored station is now in around 3000 homes in the region. ACTV is, at present, in 437 Surry County homes, 800 in Wilkes County and 1675 in the Skyline and Alleghany Cablevision viewing area. Those numbers are growing (daily) as Skyline and other systems bring customers online to new fiber-optic delivery systems in the mountain region.
Imaging Specialists has been working with ACTV by donating hosting and maintenance for the station’s web site www.alleghanycommunitytelevision.com (which was originally a Senior Project by a student that participated in the program.) Their live schedule is online now, and we hope to eventually stream station content, which will showcase Alleghany County in a way never before possible. After that happens, viewership will potentially include anyone in the world with a computer and an Internet connection.
ACTV is a relatively new organization that originated in the Alleghany County School System and the A. Anderson Huber Cyber Campus. Station Manager, Charlie Scott and Cyber Campus Manager, Travis Sturgill have been working with Alleghany High students for several years to build a modern, viable TV Station.
With their oversight, the students have been doing the lion’s share of the work, learning and performing jobs like videography, programming, announcing, sales, makeup and every other job associated with operating a TV station. Their newest project, soon to be broadcast, is an Alleghany News program. It will join the many locally produced shows including school academic and sports events, Senior projects, Sparta Town Council meetings and area church services.
Other counties all over North Carolina, have been watching ACTV closely, hoping to replicate our success. There are plans to bring in students from the UNC School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, to intern and help train Alleghany students.
ACTV is the best unknown resource in Alleghany County (and possibly Northwest North Carolina) and you should be a part of it.
If you don’t know much about the station and would like to learn more, contact Charlie Scott at 657-0825. Since it is a non-profit enterprise, overt advertising isn’t allowed, but sponsorship is welcome, either of individual shows, series or at station level. Gifts to the station will (very) soon be tax deductible after it achieves full 501(c)(3) status.
